Metcash and Mitre 10
One of the six components of strategic leadership outlined in the text is to "exploit and maintain the organisation's core competencies". The chief executive of grocery wholesaler Metcash, Andrew Reitzer, argues his company could make money from its purchase of struggling hardware chain Mitre 10 within a year, creating positive change to produce the same success with independent hardware stores as it's had with independent grocers. This is an interesting snapshot of the challenges facing Metcash as a change agent.
