Motivation — Extrinsic and intrinsic rewards

Extrinsic rewards are those administered by another person (such as a manager). Some examples of extrinsic rewards are:

  • pay
  • bonuses
  • promotions
  • time off
  • awards
  • verbal praise.

Intrinsic rewards are self-administered. They occur naturally as a person performs a task. Examples of intrinsic rewards include:

  • feelings of competency
  • worth
  • fulfilment
  • personal development.
