CSR
CSR is an unusual company. It has two core businesses — sugar and building products. CSR is a leading supplier to the building industry, manufacturing and producing a diverse range of building products including plasterboard, fibre cement, roof tiles, insulation, glass and aluminium. CSR is also Australia's largest producer of sugar and has a substantial interest in sugar refining and ethanol production. Leading business analysts have questioned the rationale for maintaining a diverse range of businesses under the CSR umbrella. Indeed, some analysts have suggested that the company would increase its overall value and profitability by splitting the company in two. The senior management of CSR agrees with the sentiments of these business analysts, and has signalled its intention to divide, or demerge, the core businesses of CSR in the coming year.
