Periodicity of atomic properties
Periodicity of physical and chemical properties of the elements is explained by the concept of 'effective nuclear charge'. Fundamentally, valence electrons are shielded from the nuclear charge by core electrons so the effective nuclear charge experienced by valence electrons is less than the actual nuclear charge. The effectiveness of this shielding decreases with increasing principal quantum number n.
