Determine functional groups in unknown organic compounds using infrared spectral data

What is the IHD of isopropylbenzene (cumene) (C₉H₁₂)?

The reference hydrocarbon for 9 C atoms is C₉H₂₀

so IHD = (20 − 12)/2 = 4

which corresponds to a benzene ring.

(It follows that aromatic compounds must have an IHD of at least 4.)
